UKBFTOG’S at Jurassic World Rebirth Premiere Red Carpet at Leicester Square

Within a male dominated industry it’s of course easy to not see ourselves and one of the things we have really pushed over the years is giving our community members access and new opportunities, giving them experiences. One of our recent access opportunities was giving to one of our members Samaria, she specialises in Wedding photography.

We asked her a couple questions about her experience and here is what she had to say:

What was the most daunting part about doing press photography, especially if was your first time?

As this wasn’t my first experience, I didn’t find it daunting at all. But I think that’s what’s amazing about UKFTOG and the opportunities we have. Due to the environment (it’s extremely male dominated, with very little ethnic diversity), it could easily be overwhelming/ daunting experience. But being fortunate enough to have opportunities that come up often, means that if you make the most of them (network), you can be confident and have a great time!

What did this experience do for you?

It was a great night out, met with other photographers. Would also say that it helped reduce the barrier to entry in the world of press.

What kit did you use?

Nikon – Switched between a 28mm & 85mm

What advise would you give someone who has never done press photography before?

I’m super fortunate being tall that I’ve not needed it, but bring a step stool just in case so that you’re not limited in the shots you can get. Don’t forget your ID – Some photographers might have a press card but don’t stress if you don’t have one – it’s just for the draw so you could use a bank card. You might not realise it but so many of the photographers there aren’t paid or working for major press. A lot of them are freelancers and shooting in the hope of selling the “money shot”. So have fun, it’s an experience!

Samaria you did an amazing job and happy we could give you this opportunity!

We can’t wait to do more things like this for more community members and so much more! If you would like to connect with us with more opportunities pop us over an email at [email protected]
