About Us
UKBFTOG is an award-winning community created to help Black women connect and thrive in the photography industry. In a field still dominated by men, finding others who share our experiences as Black women was once a challenge. Being the only Black female photographer in the room often felt isolating — but not anymore.
UKBFTOG was built so we no longer have to navigate this industry alone. Here, we grow, support, and uplift one another.
Our story
Founded by Jemella Ukaegbu in December 2017, UKBFTOG has grown into a powerful, award-winning community of Black female photographers in the UK — and it’s only getting bigger.
This community exists because of you — from attending and sharing meetups, to engaging in our Facebook group. So, thank you to all who have contributed so far, and a warm welcome to those just joining us!
Our private Facebook group now includes nearly 600 women, and we’re continuing to grow across Instagram, X, and our mailing list for those not on social media.
Over the past 7 years, we’ve hosted everything from educational workshops (like fashion & beauty photography), to social meetups, brand collaborations, award-winning exhibitions, and industry opportunities — including shadowing pro photographers and shooting red carpet events like the BAFTAs.
We also actively attend photography conventions, exhibitions, and key industry events — making space and claiming visibility wherever we go.
The UKBFTOG community is for photographers at all levels — from hobbyists to professionals.
Whether you’re just starting out, want to explore photography for fun, are working toward a professional career, or you’re already established and simply want to connect with like-minded creatives — you are welcome here.
As we step into our 8th year, we’re proud to launch something we’ve always dreamed of: the UK Black Female Photographers Directory.
We regularly receive enquiries from individuals and brands looking specifically for Black female photographers — sometimes within certain genres — and now, we’re creating a dedicated space where our members can showcase their work, tell their story, and be discovered by potential clients.
Join our private Facebook group to connect with fellow photographers. (Photographers only)
